I don't own a machine that can only restore via Internet Recovery, but my WAG is that after DLing the installer and before installing you should be able to quit the installer and save a copy of it to a safe place. I purchased a Mountain Lion installer (did so on a Mac Pro) and created the thumb drive as many Internet articles descibe. Have a Mac Mini on which I wish to reinstall the system.
